Garmin Security Vulnerability?

Garmin has a security feature on their newwer GPS units called Garmin Lock. The idea is simple enough, you program in a code and it needs that code to unlock if it’s away from a defined ‘home area’ (Where it unlocks automatically). Picked up a BlackBerry® Tour 9630 on eBay… First time buying a phone on eBay and I’ve heard of some horror stories about unclean ESN’s and phones being unable to be registered on carriers due to delinquent accounts, stolen phones etc…
